Prof Pierre Goussard is a full professor at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, as well as the Head of Clinical Units: Paediatric Pulmonology and Paediatric Intensive Care at Tygerberg Hospital. He is also the chair of the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. Tygerberg Hospital serves as a referral centre for complex cases such as tuberculosis, HIV, complicated pneumonia, airway pathology, and congenital lesions. He is a highly skilled and experienced paediatric bronchoscopist who sees 350 cases per year, using both flexible and rigid bronchoscopes. He also performs a large number of different interventional procedures. Prof Goussard collaborated with European experts to develop novel bronchoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic methods for diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis. He is a National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researcher whose research focuses on tuberculosis-related airway disease and new diagnostic methods using BAL in tuberculosis. He earned his PhD and has published 236 peer-reviewed articles as well as several book chapters. He is a faculty member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Skills course in paediatric bronchoscopy and Co-Chair of the annual Here Be Lungs Conference. He is an associate editor of Respiration, and a member of the editorial boards for the Paediatric Respiratory Journal and the African Journal of Thoracic and Critical Care Medicine. He is the recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow award for outstanding contribution to the community.
