BIOGRAPHY

Dr Shaakira Chaya is a paediatric pulmonologist and completed her at training Red Cross Children’s Hospital. She did her undergraduate training at the University of the Witwatersrand. She recently completed her PhD looking at the impact of early life exposure on lung function in African preschool children within the Drakenstein Child Health Study. Her interests also include congenital and allergic lung disease, post TB lung disease, airway pathologies and interventional bronchoscopy. She is actively involved in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and post graduate students and is currently pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship assessing the impact of early life exposures on lung function in later childhood and adolescents.
