Professor Andrew Bush qualified from Cambridge University and University College Hospital. He initially trained in adult thoracic medicine, obtaining an MD in the Department of Clinical Physiology, Brompton Hospital, and subsequently re-trained in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at Brompton and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. He was appointed Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at the Brompton and Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute in 1991 and was made Professor at Imperial College in 2007.

His research interests include the invasive and non-invasive measurement of airway inflammation in children and clinical physiology. He has supervised more than 50 MD and PhD degrees, co-authored over 800 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and written nearly 150 chapters in books and monographs. He is Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He has served as Guidelines Director of the European Respiratory Society and also chaired its Publications Committee. He is an emeritus NIHR Senior Investigator.

His honours include the British Thoracic Society medal (2022), the 2024 James Spence Medal, an Honorary Life Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and he is the 2024 ERS Presidential awardee.

Most importantly, he is the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Dylan and Jack in South Africa, and Oscar, Aya, Fletcher, Lydia, Dominic, Ilyas, and Armina in London.
